Experimental Writing Studio challenges you to think of writing not just as a way to document ideas, but as a medium for creative and critical inquiry. The module sits at the intersection of studio practice and critical studies, and is open to students from across DJCAD and the School of Humanities.
Lectures introduce you to a range of experimental writing methodologies. Practicums give you the space to unpack and apply these approaches in practice. Individual tutorials support the development of your final submission portfolio.
You'll produce an original piece of experimental writing and a critical reflection on the methodology you've chosen. Both elements contribute to your final grade.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Examine and test experimental methods of writing within an academic framework
- Explore the link between studio practice and critical writing through interdisciplinary approaches
- Develop original writing as a form of creative practice
- Engage with experimental writing methodologies including dramaturgy, performative writing, site-writing, and experimental fiction
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Apply specialist knowledge and skill within the broader theoretical framework of experimental writing
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of experimental writing as a field
- Identify, conceptualise, and execute a defined experimental writing project
- Engage with and present writing methods appropriate for a professional audience
Assignments / assessments
Experimental writing piece, 2,000 words (70%)
- An original piece of experimental writing using one of the methodologies explored in the module
Critical reflection, 1,000 words (30%)
- An analytical reflection on your chosen methodology in a theoretically appropriate manner
This module does not have a final exam.
