​​Crop Science and Biotechnology for Food Security gives you a wide-ranging view of plant biology, from evolutionary history to cutting-edge biotechnology. You will cover plant development, the genetics and genomics of crops, how plants adapt to environmental stress, and how plants interact with soil microbes and pathogens. The module brings these topics together through case study discussions on crop improvement.  You will visit Dundee Botanic Gardens and the James Hutton Institute as part of the teaching programme, gaining hands-on experience with living plant material in specialist environments.

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Explore plant evolution, domestication genetics and the principles of crop development 
  • ​Examine how plants respond to light, abiotic stress and microbial interactions 
  • ​Investigate advances in plant genomics, biotechnology and crop improvement strategies 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Explain the evolutionary history of plants and the consequences of domestication for agriculture 
  • ​Apply understanding of plant genetics and genomics to crop improvement challenges 
  • ​Critically assess relevant scientific literature in plant and crop science​
